City Walk, Glasnevin Cemetery, Newgrange
On our last leg of the journey we reached the fair city of Dublin where the statue of sweet Molly Malone resides. In Dublin we had a walking tour which included Trinity College and the Book of Kells. On our own we visited the incredible EPIC - Irish Emigration Museum, and the creepy remains of the bog bodies in the National Museum of Archaeology. On our last day we toured the historic Glasnevin Cemetery, and entered the passage tomb of Newgrange. There we experienced the winter solstice phenomenon when the sun light pierces the tomb entrance and stretches in a ray of light to its core.
Dublin Walk, Trinity College, Book of Kells
Our lodging at Cassidy's Hotel was centrally located on O'Connell Street near the O'Connell statue and Millennium Tower making city navigation easier. |
Trinity College
This college was founded in 1592 for men. Women didn't attend until 1904. George Salmon, a provost of Trinity College was quoted as saying, "Women will enter Trinity College over my dead body." Shortly after he passed away women began attending. In the photo below I am attempting to sneer as I pose besides George Salmon's statue. |
The Book of Kells were artistically illustrated and hand written on calf-skin by monks around 800 AD.
They are housed in a special room in the museum at Trinity College and photographs of them are not allowed. The Long Room of the Main Library in the museum contains over 200,000 books.

EPIC Emigration Museum and Area
At the EPIC Emigration Museum you learn about the diaspora of the Irish people. Mom and I and many others visiting the museum have Irish ancestry. This museum shares the history of the Irish leaving their homeland and their many contributions to our world and culture. As you journey through the museum you validate your "passport" in each gallery.

Glasnevin Cemetery
Daniel O'Connell's Tomb and Tower dominates the entrance to this historic cemetery that is said to house more souls than there are people living in the city of Dublin. O'Connell's wish when he died was to have "His Body sent to Ireland, His Soul to Heaven, and His Heart to Rome." Glasnevin is the final resting place of many famous people who helped shape the history of Ireland.
Newgrange
Newgrange is one of three prehistoric passage tombs located in Bru na Boinne.
